MadPea’s Spellbound Experience

I absolutely love MadPea games. Not only am I always curious what adventures/mysteries they have planned for us, I’m always excited to test my puzzle solving skills. MadPea’s Spellbound is the newest, exciting MadPea game that was released last year in November. Most hardcore MadPea fans have probably already had their fun and completed the game way before I finally got around to trying it, but for those of you on the fence about trying this experience out, I’m telling you to rise up and take this challenge! This one will test your resolution, attention to detail, endurance, and overall critical thinking skills. Spellbound is a must-play! Who is ready to enjoy this magical experience?

WARNING: THERE WILL BE SOME SPOILERS RELATING TO VISUAL GAMEPLAY, BUT NO SOLUTIONS TO PUZZLES, NO SPECIFICS TO ENDINGS, AND NO SPOILED SURPRISES. Admittedly, my MadPea game repertoire is not as vast as many other hardcore MadPea fans, but I’ve completed five games so far: Sinister Slaughters, The Tower, Seven, Nightmare in New Orleans (NiNO), and now Spellbound. Aside from MadPea gaming, I am an active gamer both in video games and board games so I’ll be discussing MadPea’s Spellbound based on my own personal tastes and perspective. My rating is completely my own opinion and will be different from everyone else’s.

Rating System

Immersion
Visuals      9/10
Sound design     7/10
Misc. (loading screens, environmental lighting, etc)      2/5

MadPea’s Spellbound is a magically spectacular visual treat. Like all the other MadPea games I have played, the adventure takes you into MadPea’s meticulously created world – this time, to the Spellbound Academy of Sorcery, set close to the quaint village of Willowshire. If you love the magical world of Harry Potter, then you will love Spellbound as you will be playing as a first year student in a school of magic and mystery but with a completely unique storyline. Being a huge fan of the wizarding world, I absolutely was excited to play this game.

MadPea Spellbound - Castle | Mine & Yours

Spellbound starts off in a village right outside the Academy of Sorcery where the castle is the main central location to navigate the multitude of rooms within the school vital in progressing throughout the game. This confined space serves more as a portal to apparate you to a total of 20 different rooms. I absolutely loved exploring the castle and anticipating what is behind each door once the level was unlocked, finding great angles to take a snapshot.

MadPea Spellbound - Ignis | Mine & Yours

So for those who read my review about Nightmare in New Orleans, you’ll know I was so in love with the sound incorporated throughout the game, especially the voice talent of everyone you would interact with. This time in Spellbound, MadPea has brought more of this humanistic feature to this magical, virtual game. I’m not as enthusiastic about the voice talent for Spellbound as I was for NiNO, but each ‘NPC’ did bring quite varying personalities depending on the House they represented. I do wish each of the Headmasters were actual avatars though. It would have made the rescue effort more humanistic and impactful.

Virion Blackstone was headmaster of Ignis whose gruff voice conveyed a bit of arrogance. Cloven Morel was headmaster of Terra whose timid voice showed that this professor was likely a tad strange and eccentric. Lyndis Wavecrest was headmaster of Aqua whose proper English voice commanded respect and level-headedness. Mizette Zephyr was headmaster of Venti who seemed quite gentle and kind with a whimsical-like personality. I do wish there was more story/history to each house described by each headmaster to entice students to join their specific house though. I understand that competition between the houses was not even a factor of the overall storyline of the game, however, I feel allowing the player to feel more invested in their choice of selecting a specific house would contribute a bit more to the overall effort of saving the school.

MadPea Spellbound - Aqua | Mine & Yours

I’m not sure how many were able to witness, but the revolving guardian gargoyles upon Miss Horlage’s time schedule in the Academy castle was a really nice touch. More surprise magical elements would have been awesome like animated/interactive portraits! (Or were there more magical surprises and I just missed it?!?!)

Content
Creativity/Originality     8/10
Story      8/10

Spellbound is a pretty cool game, especially for those who appreciate magic. In a nutshell, it is a lot of puzzle solving with some elements of hunting and a little bit of combat as well. As a first year sorcery student, you are tasked and challenged to learn different spells that eventually will help you in the end of your journey. There are a total of 12 spells to learn, three specific spells per House. The overall storyline was pretty straight forward and easy to follow.

I love these sort of magic themes because anything can happen – there is no limit to what can be done and no need to follow any real rules of physics. Spellbound isn’t bound to any rules the non-magical world must follow to function. That being said, I was expecting a bit more imagination in this magical world. Yes, there was a lot to this game in terms of moving from one level to another, so there is a lot of objectives and mechanical content (more on that below). However I felt the concept of ‘magic’ could have been pushed a bit further.

Despite this small preference of mine, there was -a lot- of content to this game. In fact, about 8 hours of gameplay. Out of all the games I have played so far, Spellbound is the longest game I have played through. It took me several nights to complete it all, breaking it up into several hours per night. I will say that because it became a routine for me to log in and get into solving mode, when I did beat the game, it felt bittersweet. I was happy that I had finally completed the game, but then I was saddened that the game came to an end LOL!

Another thing I liked was the extra Spellbound activity for Premium members. As a MadPea Premium member, this added bonus was a pleasant addition to the whole Spellbound experience. Upon completion of the extra Premium side-quest, MadPea Premium members are awarded with an achievement.

Objectives
Compelling     8/10
Variety     9/10

My favorite objectives are the explore/search ones where I have to hunt down specific items so the Alchemy lab and the Theatre were the most fun ones for me. I loved the Alchemy lab puzzle since it involved hunting aspects under a time constraint. I also really enjoyed the mini fairy tale element found in the theatre while searching for clues. There were tons of puzzles to solve in Spellbound, ranging from small line puzzles to even a one-on-one dueling match! I really enjoyed every single objective. The end goal was crystal clear where the player must “level up” to unlock more challenges while figuring out what dark power has been encapsulating the Academy.

These objectives were quite cognitive heavy. Most of the challenges involved attention to detail and then using that knowledge/clue to complete the task. While the puzzles themselves were isolated objectives, the numerous rooms served as duel purposes in which made the game flow with more depth. Essentially completing that room’s level did not necessarily mean the room would not be used for another purpose later on. I liked the multi-functionality of each phase, giving the game more immersion of the actual game environment.

Mechanics
Interactive     9/10
Interface      4/5

MadPea executed the mechanics of the game beautifully. What I mean by that is there was a seamless flow of learned skills to objective completion. Things just made sense and it was fun figuring out how to achieve success! Every magic spell learned had a purpose and depending on the circumstances, the player needed to adapt and figure out which spell would help them complete the quest. There were enough magic spell varieties that forced players to think about what they needed to do next.

I was spoiled with the Nightmare in New Orleans gameplay where there were multiple endings to the game, making it repeatable. Unfortunately, it did not seem like there were multiple endings for this game (not that there should be). But maybe it would have been interesting to see four variations of the ending depending on the House the player chose. It would have tied the House sorting in a bit more and gave more meaning to the fact that students needed to choose their allegiance wisely.

The interface of the game HUD was good – only thing I wish it had was a minimize button to save space on my screen when I was not using the HUD. Design was sleek and visually nice and the overall function of the HUD was intuitive.

Peripherals & Prizes
Outfit/Accessories     4/5
Prizes     4/5

There were four optional outfits players could purchase – each representative of the four different Houses. These outfits were custom made by the amazing creator of Gabriel!

Other wizarding accessories include pet owls and magic wands. Every student, at the start of the Spellbound game, is given a temporary wand to use for spell casting gameplay. However, I’d recommend getting your own wand by playing the MadPea Wands Gacha as you can conveniently keep it in your inventory, and each one looks pretty cool compared to the basic wand. There are a total of 10 different wand styles. Allow the wand to choose the wizard! The pet owls are actually game enhancers that have the ability to help you detect when mana crystals are nearby. Throughout the game, you will need to continuously search for mana crystals to level up so these owls can help you save time if you are not the best hunter.

The prizes at the completion of the game are mostly decor items. Each one of them were pretty nice as MadPea got some awesome creators to contribute to the awards. If you are interested in seeing all the prizes for MadPea’s Spellbound, check it out here.

Overall Game Difficulty      3/5

Medium difficulty. I completed all puzzles on my own without needing to purchase any hints. For those who do need a bit of a nudge in the right direction, players can purchase hints with the magical skeletal hour glass that is located at the start of every challenge room. Players can choose to purchase two hints or purchase a pass to skip the whole room entirely.

MadPea Spellbound - Great Hall | Mine & Yours

Overall Rating       8/10

I had a lot of fun playing MadPea’s Spellbound. The scoring adds up to 7.5 out of 10 but I’m adding a little extra to the overall rating for the sheer length of this game. Lots of effort and planning was put into this game and the game’s value just based on time spent on gameplay alone is worth the 1K price tag. Spellbound is a game really well made with fun and challenging objectives with great visual scenes – I definitely recommend this game to those who are interested in challenging your mind or just simply love magic!

This game is especially good for:
Explorers/Adventurers (curiosity is your weapon)
Challengers/Completionists (Just beat the game)
Thinkers (mind over matter)
Creators (collect resources and build your objective)
Strategists (advanced thinkers who maximize profit and minimize loss)
Socializers (lots of player interaction and engagement)

My Personal Tips

Pay attention to details – for the C Personality types (DISC) you will love this

Take lots of notes – you will be glad you wrote things down lol

Take your time – this is a long game! Take the game in and enjoy it 🙂

MadPea Halloween Hunt 2018 Experience

The MadPea Halloween Monster Hunt has come to a close on November 4th, and wow – what a ride! I’ve got some awesome sims to share with you! I’m not the biggest fan of Halloween, but MadPea really stepped up this year with some new exciting features this time around. More on that below – but first, EXPLORATION!

I really love seeing the creativity of the community, especially during Halloween time – they go all out for the spooky holiday! There are lots of haunted sims this time around, and each one was so fun to explore.

My MadPea Halloween Monster Hunt Adventure

Day 1  – Aquila III Research Station

Aquila III Research Station | Mine & Yours

The Aquila III Research Station is always in the MadPea Hunt, and every time I go, I do enjoy hunting there. I featured this sim during the summer hunt, but this time, I wanted to showcase a creepier section of the sim that was decorated specifically for Halloween. I love the alien nature of this world. There’s something so intriguing about this extraterrestrial scene that I had to capture what I saw!

Day 2 – Ethereal Sanctuary

Ethereal Sanctuary | Mine & Yours

Next stop, Ethereal Sanctuary. Also another frequent of MadPea Hunts but always so beautiful each and every time I go. There seems to be something new I discover with each visit! I like this particular spot on the sim because it has a beautiful overlook of the ocean. Beautifully decorated for peaceful rest, I spent some time here just listening to the relaxing waves of the sea.

Day 3  – Hocus Pocus – Avada Kedavra

Hocus Pocus - Avada Kedavra | Mine & Yours

This haunting sim was a delight to explore. At first glance, this Hocus Pocus sim seemed quite barren, but after walking around, I found quite a few great photographic scenes. This sim is no longer decorated at the time of writing as it prepares for Christmas, but I had to share such a great capture of the location.

Day 4 – Montfort l’Amaury – La porte Bardoul

Montfort l'Amaury | Mine & Yours

Montfort l’Amaury is an 18th century roleplay sim, rich with history and story. A village high with manors and maisons des champs, Montfort L’Amaury is full of detail and an abundance of opportunity. This scene that I captured as soon as I enter town was too beautiful to pass up. I loved the look with its quaint charm yet holds so much more story the further the path continues.

Day 5 – Naruga City

Naruga City | Mine & Yours

I was delighted to come across Siya Ellsworth’s awesome contribution to the MadPea hunt in Naruga City. This sim features a thoroughly decorated haunted mansion in an amazing sim owned by Siya, featuring a creepy storyline for all to enjoy as hunters move through the mansion. Recorders are placed throughout the establishment, giving hunters a taste of the creepiness and chaotic events recorded of the spirits that haunt the area.

Day 6 – The Peak – Romance and Beyond

The Peak - Romance and Beyond | Mine & Yours

The Peak is a beautiful sim perfect for a romantic date for that special someone in your life. Open to the public (except for the rented areas), couples can explore the land or just enjoy romantic moments together. For more intimate and private spaces, couples may rent vacation rentals for a maximum of two weeks at various themed spots such as beach cabins, honeymoon vacation homes, private skyboxes or secluded farmhouse.

And that wraps up my MadPea Halloween Hunt 2018 traveling adventure! It was a lot of fun for me, and I absolutely loved taking these snapshots whenever I saw something I wanted to capture in the moment. I’d love to see or hear what your favorite sims were!

My Personal Feedback Regarding the Hunt:

1.  Awesome Sim Participation!

I’d have to say that the main motivator for me in doing these hunts is to explore the noncommercial part of SL more. This time’s hunt really did not disappoint because there was not once during my entire hunting period that I was rolling my eyes at another store to walk through. I felt like there was a great balance of commercial properties vs. noncommercial properties. Because of the great blend, it made this hunt an enjoyable breeze to run through.

2. New Huntables!

MadPea retired the ghosts (yay!) and have created these awesome, cute (and collectible) monsters to hunt for! There were so many different monster varieties in three different colors each. Hunting these cute creatures were a blast as each species have very distinct personalities and even different sounds they make when you creep closer to them.

3. Trick or Treat doors!

These Trick or Treat doors are amazing! Unfortunately I was not able to do these last Halloween, but these doors are the best! They give out a random amount of points, little fun Halloween treats, or play tricks on you by taking you to a mini escape room experience! I loved getting rained on by points from these doors but I also quite enjoyed solving these fun little escape room tricks!

4. LET THEM EAT … Points?

I think it is safe to say that competitive cash is a thing of the past, sadly. No more Top 5 overall hunter cash award and no more daily cash reward for the Top 3 hunters. Instead points for the daily top 5 hunters per team were given out.

1000 Points to 1st place
750 Points to 2nd place
500 Points to 3rd place
250 Points to 4th place
100 Points to 5th place

5. Radar \o/

This compact radar definitely made hunting so easy and seamless by allowing hunters to minimize/expand certain trays like the hunt counter and the prize carousel.

  • Favorite Button – This functions a voting button to vote for your favorite sims. The top 10 sims selected by all hunters so far are placed here on their website. Initially, I thought it would also store locations of your (personal) favorite sims, eliminating the need to create Landmarks. Unfortunately, that function does not exist (yet!).
  • Counter that tracks each type of hunt item collected – This is more to track and obtain achievements for the more hardcore MadPea players wanting to rank in the MadPea Player Portal. Check your standings here.
  • Prize Carousel – Shows all the unlocked prizes, allowing scrolling to see more of the unlocked prizes besides just the most recent one. Allows for remote prize redemption!

Possible Add-ons for Future Radars:

  • Favorite Button – Would love if the HUD could store a hunter’s personal favorite sims so they can come back to the sim at the click of a button.
  • Hunt HUD Radar size – Now that the radar is nicely compact, a scaleable option would be nice too. Maybe it is too small for some people now. Maybe it is too big for others on their screen.

6. Awesome Prizes!

There were so really cool prizes for this Halloween hunt though I do wish there were a few more wearables. The final prize is absolutely amazing! It is a mega prize consisting of a Monster Mystery Dollhouse Mansion with all the cute huntable monsters in miniature size! The Mansion includes working lights, music, clock, as well as an interactive mystery to solve with a bonus prize. You did not want to miss out on this prize!! If you haven’t already, check out my other posts here to see what some of the MadPea Halloween Monster Hunt prizes are. All prizes are also showcased on the MadPea Halloween Monster Hunt Website as well as their Facebook page.

Thank you to MadPea for putting on a wonderful hunt for us all to participate in, making this spooky season so much more enjoyable! Also, big thank you to all the sim location participants who placed out monsters for us all to gather. This Halloween Monster hunt would not have been successful without your generosity!

Happy Halloween!! The MadPea Halloween Monster Hunt is here with some new spooky madness! If you aren’t hunting for monsters, then you are missing out! MadPea – The Tower

MadPea creates fun puzzle adventure games for those ready for a challenge. The Tower, an escape room puzzle game experience, debuted back in March of last year. It is unknown how much longer this game experience will remain as MadPea likes to rotate out old games for their newer games – so if you haven’t played, go play it before it is gone!

MadPea - The Tower Entrance | Mine & Yours

In The Tower, you’ll find yourself with absolutely no memory. How did you get here? Why are you even here? Who are you even? Perhaps you’ll find the answer once you escape this place by solving a series of challenging puzzles. Have you uncovered the truth and escaped The Tower yet?

Rise to the challenge here!

MadPea - The Tower Cafe | Mine & Yours

To play, you’ll need to purchase the Game HUD for 1000L. This will not only include the essential Tower Game HUD to allow you to advance through levels, but will provide you with an exclusive outfit and themed prizes upon completion.

MadPea - The Tower Lab | Mine & Yours

A few tips:
– Have your sounds on
– Purchase Earpiece Game Enhancing Add-On. This earpiece will offer you some helpful hints and also offers additional voice dialogue that gives a much better immersive experience. Plus I am biased because the voice-over is done by my talented friend, Kilolo Jenkins.
– If you get stuck on a level and have no idea how to get passed it, you can purchase Tower Access Cards which will allow you to bypass the puzzle and advance to the next level. Also note that the MadPea group is full of helpful Peas who may be willing to help out.

MadPea Summer Hunt 2018 Experience

The MadPea Summer Hunt is coming to an end on June 27th (today), and what a blast I had! I’ve got some awesome sims to share with you! The Summer Hunt is always my favorite hunt MadPea hosts because: 1) Summer is always so colorful and lively, making it a fun time for all sorts of activities, 2) A lot of the sims are beautifully and enjoyably summer themed, 3) the prizes are always awesome quality and you can use them all season long.

This time around, there were a lot of great sims to explore. Usually hunts are filled with stores, but this time, I came across a lot more landscaped areas (private residences, communities, public photographic sims) than usual! I do hope this trend continues as I thoroughly enjoyed snapping pictures of my experience.

My MadPea Summer Hunt Adventure

Day 1  – The North Shore at Fairhaven

Stratography East | Mine & Yours

I was so happy to have come across The North Shore at Fairhaven. Above ground there is a beautiful, beachy island scene with surfing and plenty of places to explore. Below ground under sea level was so exciting for me. I absolutely love sims like these where there is an appreciation for aquatic life and the magical world the sea holds. The North Shore was a visual treat for me and I always loved coming back here for some shell hunting. This sim was actually inspired by the real The North Shore in Oahu which is one of the biggest surfing mecca in the world. I am so glad they brought this in world for all to appreciate the many gifts an island gives.

Day 2 – Fairhaven

Stratography | Mine & Yours

Right next to The North Shore is the main area – Fairhaven. An adult beach with a tropical jungle, Fairhaven has many small intimate areas as well as big surf waves to enjoy. Don’t have a surfboard? Don’t worry! There are rezzers all along the island to easily pick up a board and catch some waves. On the ground is the island fun while up in the sky is the actual city of Fairhaven. This rundown city has definitely seen its better days, but is a great spot to explore or take pictures.

Day 3  – Aquila III Research Station

Aquila III Research Station | Mine & Yours

The Aquila III Research Station is quite an interesting place to explore! The land has it’s intrigue and wonder to explore while out in the open is a pleasant tropical sim for some swimming or even surfing! As you can see in my snapshot, I discovered a very interesting wonder while there hunting!

Day 4 – Calypso Bay

Calypso Bay | Mine & Yours

The Silent Cove at Calypso Bay was a fun lil’ pirate cove hosted by fellow Peas: Mathias and Sajiah. Definitely just a popup spot for the hunt while it lasted, but I always looked forward to hunting at this little treasure spot with its strategic seashell placements and the overall lighthearted ambiance.

Day 5 – Ethereal Sanctuary

Ethereal Sanctuary | Mine & Yours

Ethereal Sanctuary is a beautiful, peaceful escape for everyone – dreamers, romantics, dancers, contemplators, explorers alike! Whatever it is you seek, this quiet place can be that bit of heaven you require. There are tons of spots to discover and enjoy here on the island. There is likely something for everyone.

Day 6 – Pegasoi

Pegasoi | Mine & Yours

The Ippos Collective is a group of four fantasy inspired sims that are Rez-Friendly for all to enjoy and capture photos. This wonderous place is where some call home, enjoy the magic that surrounds them (rentable plots available). Each sim has its own charm. For the hunt, I was at Pegasoi which is a fantasy themed, aimed to really support the creative side of individuals. The other sims in the colllective are: Ippos (Lush Island), Nymphai (the Town Square, and Sylpha (Small islands and lots of water).

Day 7 – The Upside Down Wonderland Garden

Vivaldi Wonderland Gardens | Mine & Yours

Wonderland Gardens was a popup maze experience hosted by Kyle Beckett (a MadPea game designer) for MadPea hunters to enjoy (or rip their hairs out). To illustrate why this experience may have been maddening, I took a picture of how I saw things while trying to escape the maze. Everything was upside down!! This little obstacle course was an amusing and entertaining way to collect shells. I definitely appreciate this challenge, as all MadPea fans can agree. It’s just in our nature!

And that wraps up my MadPea Summer Hunt 2018 traveling adventure!

2. LET THEM EAT … Points?

I think it is safe to say that competitive cash is a thing of the past, sadly. No more Top 5 overall hunter cash award and no more daily cash reward for the Top 3 hunters. Instead points for the daily top 5 hunters per team were given out.

1000 Points to 1st place
750 Points to 2nd place
500 Points to 3rd place
250 Points to 4th place
100 Points to 5th place

3. Radar \o/

Yes! Thank you! Radar UI has been changed and this once negative talking point is now a positive! This compact radar definitely made hunting so much sweeter by allowing hunters to minimize/expand certain trays like the hunt counter and the prize carousel.

  • Counter that tracks each type of hunt item collected – This is more to tack and obtain achievements for the more hardcore MadPea players wanting to rank in the MadPea Player Portal. Check your standings here.
  • Prize Carousel – Shows all the unlocked prizes, allowing scrolling to see more of the unlocked prizes besides just the most recent one.

4. Awesome Prizes!

I always love the prizes for the Summer Hunt. I felt like there was something for everyone. Even if all of the prizes did not appeal to you, I am sure at least one of them would have been a great addition to your avi or home (especially during the summer season!). If you haven’t already, check out my other posts here and here to see what some of the MadPea Summer Hunt prizes are. All prizes are also showcased on the MadPea Summer Hunt Website as well as their Facebook page.

Thank you to MadPea for putting on a wonderful hunt for us all to participate in, making this hot summer season so much more enjoyable! Also, big thank you to all the sim location participants who placed out seashells for us all to gather. This Summer hunt would not have been successful without your generosity!

My latest obsession besides going out shell hunting has been those flippin’ adorable Jaglions from Black Bantam by Stasey Oller out now at The Dubai Event. I love them so much that I carry two with me everywhere I go now. These little cubs are my absolute favorite!

MadPea Summer Hunt 2018 Promo

IT’S THAT TIME AGAIN! The MadPea Summer Hunt is always my favorite hunt because I just love everything summer brings: fun in the sun, refreshing swims in the water, popping tropical color all around, and a reason to show more skin 😉 MadPea Summer Hunt has some amazing prizes this time around to hunt for – here is just a taste!

If you aren’t hunting for sea shells, then you are missing out! MadPea’s Summer Hunt runs from June 13th to June 27th, and the hunt is a dynamic experience where all seashell hunters hunt at different sims on a daily basis. Shells are constantly appearing and disappearing, giving hunters plenty of opportunity to rake in those points for prize redemption. Also, there are instant prizes that can be found in oysters, making the hunt a lot more enjoyable with these surprise treats.

To join the hunt, buy the MadPea Summer Hunt HUD for $L100. For more information about the hunt, check out the website here and to scope out all the unlocked prizes thus far, click here. I’ll be covering the Summer Hunt a lot more in detail in a later post.
