The Forgotten Dead’s Playground

MadPea released a unique, rundown playground for the March 2018 round of The Imaginarium, perfect for decorating those post-apocalyptic or wasteland scenes. I couldn’t resist a little fun and introduced a bit of dead into the playground too. Sometimes, there’s more to just wandering around aimlessly and eating brains for these zombies.

MadPea Forgotten Playground | Mine & Yours

There are 18 commons and 2 rares in the set. If you play MadPea’s The Forgotten Playground machine 20 times, then you’ll get the Gift of Imagination (GOI) item as well! Remember, once The Imaginarium event is over, this gift will be retired! Most of the items in this set is animated of some sort, making it a fun interactive set for more than just one person.

The Bouncy Castle RARE makes you bounce as soon as you get inside it, allowing you to move any which way you want in the bouncy space. In order for this awesome bounce house to work, you’ll need to make sure push is enabled on the land and that the bounce house is owned by the same owner of the land (or deeded to the land group).

The Rocket Slide (GOI) is animated upon sitting on the object, playing a sequence of your avatar climbing up the ladder and then sliding down. You can even bring up a menu to allow adjusting for your avatar’s height. The seesaw is cute, having animations for for both female and male sits, and automatically moving up and down once a single avatar is seated. The Merry-Go-Round spins and allows up to 4 avatars to sit on this item with four different animations to toggle through by clicking “swap”. The Swing Carousel spins as well and can seat up to 8 avatars with two different animations to choose from.

My grandmother (from my father’s side) is from Shanghai and I am still fortunate enough to be able to have her in my life. She’s had a long, tumultuous life, especially during the madness of the Chinese Revolution. Now, her life is more calm here in the States with me where she lives a more tranquil and modest lifestyle, close to her family and only a phone call away. Every few days I go visit my grandmother and take care of her, making sure she has everything she needs and her home is tidy. Her home has become a second home to me. Just recently my grandmother reached an amazing age of 89.

請進 – Welcome to my grandma’s home.

Admittedly, I am a fellow MadPea fan who just recently started getting into these interactive games last year, so my MadPea game repertoire is not as vast as many other MadPea fans. I’ve completed four games so far: Sinister Slaughters, The Tower, Seven, and now Nightmare in New Orleans (NiNO). Despite the limited MadPea gaming exposure, I am an active gamer both in video games and board games so I’ll be discussing MadPea’s Nightmare in New Orleans based on my own personal tastes and perspective. My rating is completely my own opinion and will be different from everyone else’s.

Rating System

Visuals      9/10
Sound design      8/10
Misc. (loading screens, environmental lighting, etc)      2/5

MadPea’s Nightmare in New Orleans is a visual treat. Like all the other MadPea games I have played, the adventure takes you into MadPea’s meticulously created world – this time, to the culturally rich city of New Orleans. Last time I visited NOLA was summer of 2014 where heat is no joke, the alcohol flows, the food is fresh and spicy, and the city is full of life. Art at every corner, people dancing in the streets, music in the air, so I was extremely excited for MadPea’s take on such a soulful destination in SL. Nightmare in New Orleans sends you to a handful of diverse locations within the city and each location is amazingly decorated. The space is large enough for exploration (some are massive plots!!) with relevant, high quality decor. I absolutely loved drinking in the scenery and exploring the area, finding great angles to take a snapshot.

Let’s talk about the sounds for this game – I AM IN LOVE! As soon as I heard the voices from these characters MadPea created with animated avatars, my heart just warmed and swelled with such happiness. Yes, yes, yes! The voices were so good! Voice acting is often overlooked in a lot of games and I am just so completely happy that MadPea found talent amidst the SL community. These actors/actresses really made the game characters come to life with not only depth in the voice, but such great flow and idiosyncrasies in speech patterns. Each character spoke only a few lines, but I craved more! I even clicked on characters from a distance away (when I played a second time) because I was too eager to hear the voices again, only to be greeted with the following: “Sally Dupre: I can’t hear you from there, don’t be afraid and come a little closer.” Aw dang it, the game didn’t have Sally voice that line and I was saddened. Sally, I just want to hear another line with that sultry, smooth voice of yours. One more line, please!!!

Big shout out to Dextrum Boucher, Divinity Matova, Laetitia Vella, Sassy Nitely, and Veruca Beck for their amazing voiceovers!

Anyway, as you can see, I am a huge fan of the voice acting in this game. Some other things I would have liked to see more is maybe a little bit of the city itself. Perhaps a scene outside the club in the back alley where players can hear the whines of trumpets and saxophones off in the distance. Or maybe a scene in the iconic French Quarter, just to be further immersed in the actual city of New Orleans. Each scene in the game felt so isolated from one another because they were all so different. A common city scene would have tied this all together a little bit more meaningfully to remind the players that yes, even though New Orleans is so diverse where every corner can be a completely different aspect of the city, it is still one big location.

Creativity/Originality      9/10
Story      8/10

I am probably biased because I just love New Orleans, but this game left me completely happy upon completion that I may be rating each category higher than I usually would. I don’t even know if it is possible to not be creative with anything inspired by New Orleans. That being said, I really loved how NiNO’s gameplay flowed from one scene to the next. The diversity of scenes were greatly appreciated and the gameplay itself was very fun.

Livvy and I played the game together and our favorite scene was the bayou – hands down. It tied in my most fav kind of game play – hunt and prey. I had a lot of fun running around the gorgeous bayou, trying to seek out game clues while shooting zombies in the process. Livvy did not have a weapon (she lost her knife in the struggle with an alligator!) while I had a shot gun (a perk you can play for in Madpea’s Mama Mojo’s Bayou Bargains gacha). She would run around, finding clues while I distracted the aggro’d zombies and snakes that were guarding the area. My favorite part is when as soon as Livvy finds the clue, she zips away, waving “Bai babyyyy! I don’t got a weapon so I runnin’ awaaaay!” and leaves me to deal with the enemies I am trying to eliminate.

The storyline was intriguing (but then again, I don’t know if it is possible to be uninteresting when inspired by New Orleans!) and I loved meeting each character as well as completing some of their missions. The best part in terms of story was the possibility of multiple endings. For NiNO, there were two different possible endings, depending on the way you would play the game. I love that aspect as it creates another opportunity of multiple rounds of gameplay as well as figuring out how to unlock the alternate ending.

Compelling      7/10
Variety      9/10

My favorite objectives are the explore/search ones where I have to hunt down specific items. There were a few of those in this game and I LOVED it! In fact, right off the bat, you as the player are kind of plopped into the game without much to go off on, so you have to figure out a way to advance to the next step. The logic was solid in how to search for clues, and what I loved most was that clues for a single mission may not necessarily be in that mission’s location. I love, love, love that previous scenes are also possible places to find clues because the places are worth revisiting with how detailed and beautifully decorated they are! There was a particular puzzle in the cathedral’s private office that I did not know what the relevance of it was to the theme of the game. It felt a little out of place, though it was fun to complete it.

Interactive      8/10
Interface      4/5

I love that MadPea took the time to make character avatars that interact with the player via menu options like a lot of story driven games we see now. Though most interactions lead to the same end result, I’d like to see more opportunities for more endings. When I was a kid, I was addicted to those Choose Your Own Adventure games, discovering what actions lead to what sort of ending. Those were always fun for me to figure out.

It is also worth noting here that the combat portion of the bayou was my favorite part! I had a blast doing that scene and because the zombies/enemies are aggro-based, not just aimlessly wandering around as easy targets, it made the gameplay a lot more enjoyable.

The interface of the game HUD was good – I have no complaints about it. Design was sleek and minimal in that the buttons were collapsible and the overall function of the HUD was intuitive. Great visual design of the HUD as well. Loved the design of the Juju coin. Really wish players got a Juju coin souvenir. In fact, I think MadPea should start one of those destination/attraction coin collection souvenirs as a rezzable prize for each game completion.

Peripherals & Prizes
Outfit/Accessories      3/5
Prizes     4/5

There were two optional outfits players could purchase – 1 for females and 1 for males. The female outfit (50’s style colorful dress) looked cute! The one for male (formal suit) wasn’t my style as it looked a bit clunky on me. The optional game accessories (enhancers) from the Mama Mojo Bayou Bargains gacha set are pretty neat trinkets. Some items are great voodoo souvenirs while other items (such as the shotgun) can give a nice advantage in the combat part of the game. Another cool enhancer is the rare Swamp boat that gives you the license to drive a boat on the actual game’s bayou swamp!

The prizes at the completion of the game are quite cool (for someone like me who likes to decorate scenes). MadPea got some amazing creators to contribute to the awards. If you are interested in seeing all the prizes for MadPea’s NiNO, check it out here.

Overall Game Difficulty      3/5

Medium difficulty. I completed all puzzles on my own except for the last puzzle which are my least favorite kinds of puzzles. I am sure others can look at it and solve it easily in a few minutes, but I was working on that thing for a while and really did not have the patience to figure it out. Thank goodness for the help of that Juju coin though.

Overall Rating       8.5/10

I had a lot of fun playing MadPea’s Nightmare in New Orleans. I know my allocated points actually add up to 8/10, but I felt that because I really did enjoy playing the game, I would bump it up a bit, especially with the awesome visual and sound designs. A game really well made with fun and challenging objectives with great visual scenes and talented voice acting – I definitely recommend this game to everyone!

This game is especially good for:
Explorers/Adventurers (curiosity is your weapon)
Challengers/Completionists (Just beat the game)
Strategists (advanced thinkers who maximize profit and minimize loss)
Creators (collect resources and build your objective)
Socializers (lots of player interaction and engagement)

L.A. is where everything is at. Everything you can imagine. Los Angeles is home to rich, glamorous Hollywood stars and families barely getting by in concentrated poverty neighborhoods. Cornerstore mom and pop venues to Michelin star restaurants. Food from every culture. Music around the world. Art everywhere.

At any time, any place, many hearts who claim the diverse city of Los Angeles as home have such deep stories.

At 5:04PM, a mother of five is getting off her first job to pick up her kids from after school daycare before rushing off to her second job. A Hollywood-bound barista is sneaking in to work after leaving mid-shift for an audition. A boy is at marching band practice, pushing through endurance training to be the best in his drumline. A girl is getting dressed in her sexiest outfit before heading off to meet her friends at the club.

Me? At 5:04PM, I’m heading to Alfred’s coffee place on Melrose Avenue for a treat – a delicious macchiato in a chocolate cone – while I find some time to write this SL entry. Walking there, I’m surrounded in rich culture and art, blessed to be around such creativity and talent. The walls are covered in color and the streets are filled with people from every corner of the world. Welcome to L.A. – the city of dreams. What’s your story?
